Private and mission schools in Sabah receive RM8mil yearly

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has given out some RM8mil to various private and mission schools in the state yearly, Assistant Minister of Finance Melanie Chia said during the Sabah state assembly on Wednesday.

Responding to a question from Justin Guka (BN-Bingkor), Chia said the financial assistance depended on the amount sought by the respective schools and the overall funds aside for the purpose annually.

Meanwhile, Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan said the Water Department was encountering losses totalling some RM19mil yearly in the east coast Tawau district.

Describing the losses as “highly unusual,” he said about 75% of water produced in the district never reached consumers.

Replying to Jimmy Wong Sze Phin (Tanjong Batu), Tan said the department was implementing a variety of measures to reduce leakages in the district's main water pipelines and water thefts that contributed to the losses.

To another question from Wong, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Edward Khoo said the state government was taking steps to ensure that open spaces such as parks in town areas were preserved.

He said the Natural Resources Office was in the midst of gazetting such areas with the assistance of the various local authorities.
