Relief for all mission schools

KOTA KINABALU: Mission schools and Christian groups in the state here heaved a collective sigh of relief when it was decided that the schools could continue displaying crosses in their compounds.

The assurance from Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar should prompt the schools to live up to their established reputations, said Sabah Council of Churches chairman Datuk Bishop Voo Thien Fui.

“We are happy with the government’s assurance on the matter,” he said.

Former La Salle secondary school principal Brother Charles O’ Leary said Noh’s statement would serve to dispel any anxiety among Christian groups nationwide.

Crosses were common at mission schools dating back hundreds of years, said Brother Charles.

Such schools had also contributed to the development of Malaysia particularly in promoting education since independence.

On Monday, Noh told Parliament that it was traditional for mission schools to feature crosses and there was no reason to remove them.
