90-year-old St George's needs help

I WOULD like to thank Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein for announcing recently that schools more than 100 years old will be recognised under a programme to be implemented by the ministry.

Schools more than 100 years old or about to reach 100 are mostly mission schools set up by the La Salle Brothers.

Most of the land and buildings still belong to them, and the infrastructure of these schools has not been upgraded for years simply
because they do not belong to the Government.

Some schools got more than they required in financial assistance, others almost nothing although they produced students who excelled both in the classroom and outside.

One such school that may be left behind getting premier perks is St George's Institution, Taiping.

This year, our school is celebrating its 90th anniversary. It has produced judges, lawyers, doctors, ministers and professionals. The
school is also active in co-curricular activities.

On behalf of the committee of the Parent-Teacher Association, I would urge the minister to consider this school when implementing the programme to upgrade facilities.

Over the years, the lack of funds has taken a toll on the school, previously run by the La Salle Brothers. The roof in many parts leaks.

There are hardly enough tables and chairs for pupils. Basic amenities are in a dilapidated state.

It is no secret that mission schools are partially aided and very short of funds. For decades, they had to turn to the PTA and school board
whenever additional funds were needed.

The ministry should consider purchasing the land and building from the La Salle Brothers so that it becomes a fully assisted school. We are
really in need of financial aid as soon as possible.

The PTA, the Old Georgians Association and the school board have been raising funds for many years now and we would like to pass the baton back to the relevant authorities.
