| Malaysian Mission Schools News Archive New Straits Times, Tuesday, May 3, 2005 Schools more than 100 years old or about to reach 100 are mostly mission schools set up by the La Salle Brothers. Most of the land and buildings still belong to them, and the infrastructure of these schools has not been upgraded for years simply Some schools got more than they required in financial assistance, others almost nothing although they produced students who excelled both in the classroom and outside. One such school that may be left behind getting premier perks is St George's Institution, Taiping. This year, our school is celebrating its 90th anniversary. It has produced judges, lawyers, doctors, ministers and professionals. The On behalf of the committee of the Parent-Teacher Association, I would urge the minister to consider this school when implementing the programme to upgrade facilities. Over the years, the lack of funds has taken a toll on the school, previously run by the La Salle Brothers. The roof in many parts leaks. There are hardly enough tables and chairs for pupils. Basic amenities are in a dilapidated state. It is no secret that mission schools are partially aided and very short of funds. For decades, they had to turn to the PTA and school board The ministry should consider purchasing the land and building from the La Salle Brothers so that it becomes a fully assisted school. We are The PTA, the Old Georgians Association and the school board have been raising funds for many years now and we would like to pass the baton back to the relevant authorities. ONG AH SUN |
